Throng имеет в виду большие массы людей, очень близко стоящих друг к другу, однако не обязательно создающих шум и толчею: throngs of people cheered the first Soviet cosmonaut. Mob – неорганизованная или очень большая толпа людей (в этом значении употребляется главным образом в США и Австралии: you could scarcely call it a crowd, it was so large, it was a mob). В этом случае multitude приближается к русскому простонародье и употребляется с определенным артиклем: to throw largess to the multitude 'бросать толпе щедрые дары'.
