Un catalogue collectif mondial en ligne est un catalogue collectif utilisé et/ou alimenté par des milliers de bibliothèques et centres de documentation. Le catalogue collectif mondial le plus connu est WorldCat, créé dès 1971 par l’association OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) et devenu au fil des ans une gigantesque base de données bibliographiques. Un autre grand catalogue collectif mondial est le RLG Union Catalog, créé en 1980 par le RLG (Research Library Group, qui devient ensuite Research Libraries Group). Une version web de ce catalogue, appelée RedLightGreen, est mise en accès libre au printemps 2004, avec une version bêta disponible dès l’automne 2003. WorldCat migre aussi sur le web en août 2006, en version bêta, et propose en accès libre non seulement les catalogues des bibliothèques membres mais aussi leurs documents électroniques (livres, articles, photos, musique, vidéos, livres audio). Après trois ans d’activité, RedLightGreen cesse en novembre 2006, et le RLG est intégré à OCLC. -
75 Projet Gutenberg
En juillet 1971, Michael Hart crée le Projet Gutenberg pour diffuser gratuitement sous forme électronique les oeuvres littéraires du domaine public. Un projet longtemps considéré par ses détracteurs comme impossible à grande échelle. Site pionnier à tous égards, le Projet Gutenberg est à la fois le premier site d’information sur un réseau encore embryonnaire et la première bibliothèque numérique. Les livres sont numérisés en mode texte (TXT) en utilisant le code ASCII (American standard code for information interchange). Lorsque l’utilisation du web se généralise, au milieu des années 1990, le projet trouve un second souffle et un rayonnement international. Les collections atteignent 1.000 livres en août 1997, 2.000 livres en mai 1999, 3.000 livres en décembre 2000, 4.000 livres en octobre 2001, 5.000 livres en avril 2002, 10.000 livres en octobre 2003, 15.000 livres en janvier 2005 et 20.000 livres en décembre 2006, dans 50 langues, avec 360 nouveaux livres par mois, 38 sites miroirs dans de nombreux pays et plusieurs dizaines de milliers de téléchargements par jour. En octobre 2001, la principale source des livres devient Distributed Proofreaders, créé par Charles Franks pour gérer la correction partagée entre volontaires. Michael Hart espère franchir la barre du million de livres d’ici 2015. D’abord essentiellement anglophones, les collections deviennent peu à peu multilingues et le Projet Gutenberg s’internationalise. Le Projet Gutenberg Europe est lancé en janvier 2004 par le Projet Rastko, basé à Belgrade, en Serbie. -

Architecte designer, Pierre Schweitzer crée en octobre 1996 le concept d’\@folio (qui se prononce "a-folio"), dans le cadre d’un projet de design déposé à l’Ecole d’architecture de Strasbourg. Défini comme un baladeur de textes ou encore un support de lecture nomade, \@folio est destiné à la lecture de textes glanés sur l’internet. Il cherche à mimer, sous forme électronique, le dispositif technique du livre, afin d’offrir une mémoire de fac-similés reliés en hypertexte pour faciliter le feuilletage. "\@folio est un support de lecture nomade, écrit Pierre Schweitzer en janvier 2001. J’hésite à parler de livre électronique, car le mot ’livre’ désigne aussi bien le contenu éditorial (quand on dit qu’untel a écrit un livre) que l’objet en papier, génial, qui permet sa diffusion. La lecture est une activité intime et itinérante par nature. \@folio est un baladeur de textes, simple, léger, autonome, que le lecteur remplit selon ses désirs à partir du web, pour aller lire n’importe où. Il peut aussi y imprimer des documents personnels ou professionnels provenant d’un CD-Rom. Les textes sont mémorisés en faisant: ’imprimer’, mais c’est beaucoup plus rapide qu’une imprimante, ça ne consomme ni encre ni papier. Les liens hypertextes sont maintenus au niveau d’une reliure tactile."
