2 Cotton, William
SUBJECT AREA: Textiles[br]b. 1819 Seagrave, Leicestershire, Englandd. after 1878[br]English inventor of a power-driven flat-bed knitting machine.[br]Cotton was originally employed in Loughborough and became one of the first specialized hosiery-machine builders. After the introduction of the latch needle by Matthew Townsend in 1856, knitting frames developed rapidly. The circular frame was easier to work automatically, but attempts to apply power to the flat frame, which could produce fully fashioned work, culminated in 1863 with William Cotton's machine. In that year he invented a machine that could make a dozen or more stockings or hose simultaneously and knit fashioned garments of all kinds. The difficulty was to reduce automatically the number of stitches in the courses where the hose or garment narrowed to give it shape. Cotton had early opportunities to apply himself to the improvement of hosiery machines while employed in the patent shop of Cartwright \& Warner of Loughborough, where some of the first rotaries were made. He remained with the firm for twenty years, during which time sixty or seventy of these machines were turned out. Cotton then established a factory for the manufacture of warp fabrics, and it was here that he began to work on his ideas. He had no knowledge of the principles of engineering or drawing, so his method of making sketches and then getting his ideas roughed out involved much useless labour. After twelve years, in 1863, a patent was issued for the machine that became the basis of the Cotton's Patent type. This was a flat frame driven by rotary mechanism and remarkable for its adaptability. At first he built his machine upright, like a cottage piano, but after much thought and experimentation he conceived the idea of turning the upper part down flat so that the needles were in a vertical position instead of being horizontal, and the work was carried off horizontally instead of vertically. His first machine produced four identical pieces simultaneously, but this number was soon increased. Cotton was induced by the success of his invention to begin machine building as a separate business and thus established one of the first of a class of engineering firms that sprung up as an adjunct to the new hosiery manufacture. He employed only a dozen men and turned out six machines in the first year, entering into an agreement with Hine \& Mundella for their exclusive use. This was later extended to the firm of I. \& R.Morley. In 1878, Cotton began to build on his own account, and the business steadily increased until it employed some 200 workers and had an output of 100 machines a year.[br]Bibliography1863, British patent no. 1,901 (flat-frame knitting machine).Further ReadingF.A.Wells, 1935, The British Hosiery and Knitwear Industry: Its History and Organisation, London (based on an article in the Knitters' Circular (Feb. 1898).A brief account of the background to Cotton's invention can be found in T.K.Derry and T.I. 6 Atlas
A name given to gowns and petticoats about 1712 when there were advertised for sale "a purple and gold atlas gown", "a scarlet and gold atlas petticoat edged with silver", and "a blue and gold atlas gown and petticoat". ———————— A warp knit cotton fabric used very extensively for fabric gloves. The principal feature is the striped appearance of the back which shows horizontal stripes from 3/8-in. to 3/4-in. wide. In making this type of fabric, the yarn guides move in one direction for a number of courses and then reverse for a similar number. Two bars are generally used and they move in opposite directions. One series of warp threads arc used for single atlas with a traverse lap; or two series of warps making similar laps, but in opposite directions for double atlas, and this is perfectly ladder-proof, whereas the single atlas is not. The double atlas is largely used in making rayon lingerie. ———————— The German, Dutch, Russian and Danish name for the 5-end satin weave. The term is used to indicate the satin ground weave used in damasks, thus: - The 5-end atlas is the ordinary 5-end satin, and so on to 16-end atlas. A lining cloth - cotton warp and silk weft - woven 5-shaft sateen - giving a weft face of silk in many qualities. Another Atlas fabric with cotton warp and silk weft is made with the 8-shaft sateen weave. -

10 Lisle Thread
LISLE THREAD (see Hosiery Yarns, cotton)Super yarns used principally for hosiery and underwear. Spun from the finest of long staple combed cotton, hard twisted, gassed and mercerised to give a smooth surface. Originally made from flax at Lille (France) and used for open weave net fabrics. The cotton thread is harder twisted than usual in the doubling process in order to give a firm feel to the fabric, in addition to its better wearing quality and greater elasticity. Knit fabrics made from lisle thread have less tendency to " ladder " than other threads. The counts range from 2/50's to 2/100's or finer. It was known as Scotch thread. -

15 Chain Stitch
A sewing machine stitch of loop formation in which each loop supports its predecessor. It may be made with one or two threads (see Cable Knitting) ———————— One of the most ancient of embroideries, and first brought from the East, where it is still done by Persians, Indians and Chinese. It was done on any material and in all kinds of thread, gold, silver, silk, cotton etc. The stitch is much used in ornamenting church fabrics. Tambour work is chain stitch done with a hook instead of a needle. Machine-wrought work has practically taken the place of the hand work. ———————— A stitch resembling a chain used in embroidery, tambour work and crochet. -
16 Closing
Low quality cotton fabrics with spaces between the threads are treated with some filling mixture and then calendered. The pressure is not so heavy as to flatten the threads but just enough to close or fill up the spaces. ———————— This is the operation in which the glove is really formed. It consists of sewing the inside of the fingers to the fourchettes which have already been attached to the finger backs. -
17 Corduroy
A term that is commonly known as 2 & 2 rib, or two ribs alternating on face and back of children's stockings. ———————— A strong cotton cloth used for suitings. It is cut pile fabric, and has hard-wearing qualities. The weave has a cord or rib surface with either round or flat tops, with pile formed by the weft. When woven with a twill back it is known as a " Genoa back," and when a plain back is used it is termed " tabby back " corduroy. Fabrics of this class are woven in the same way as velvets, except that the pile picks are bound by the warp so as to form straight lines of floats; thus producing a ribbed surface. After weaving, the material undergoes (before cutting) the same stiffening and liming process as velvets. Corduroys are made in many varieties, known as fine reed, eight shafts, thicksets, constitutions, cables, etc. (see Constitutionals). The illustration shows a corduroy design, wherein crosses show ground weaves and filled squares the pile picks. An illustration is given of the cloth with the pile cut. The ribs may vary from 12 to 1 per inch ▪ -

20 Finishing
FINISHING (Gloves, knit)The operations used to prepare knitted glove fabric for manufacture and these are usually shrinking, dyeing, drying, sueding and pasting. ———————— The imparting of special characteristics to certain makes of cotton goods to give them a resemblance to linen, wool, or silk. Finishing is an extensive and complicated art; and the various methods of working are modified according to whether white, grey, coloured, or printed goods are under consideration. Many forms of treatment call for the provision of specially constructed machines. The several main operations that are variously called into use may be classified in the following manner, though order of procedure is necessarily dependent on circumstances: - Singeing, raising, shearing, brushing, steaming, starching, calendering (various forms) impregnating, breaking-down, damping, mangling, moireing, embossing, stentering and stretching, doubling, measuring, plaiting, marking, pressing and packing. Many of the single operations are likewise modified according to the quality of the cloth and the nature of the finish desired. For instance, that of calendering takes many forms from the comparatively simple process of exerting pressure on the cloth for giving a slightly smooth surface, to more complicated ones and to " schreinering " for a very high gloss.
