2 Cotton Felt (Papermakers)
This is a thick fabric, made from several layers of cotton cloth, up to 6-ply cloth is made, each ply with its own warp and weft, and all are stitched together in the loom. A super lining fabric, made from a silk warp and combed Egyptian cotton weft, in the 8-shaft satin weave, giving a warp face of silk and a weft back of cotton. 5 Cotton Grass
The downy bristles, or so-called fibres of the grass-like sedge - Eriophorum latifolium - which grows on the bogs and marshes of the hilly districts of England. Attempts have been made to use the fibres, which are not spirally twisted, for spinning of yarns, but without success. Examples of cloth made from the fibre are to be seen in Kew Gardens. -

8 Tennis Cloth
Cotton cloth made in several qualities from bleached or cream warp and weft and soft finished. In narrow widths 28-in. to 33-in., 76 ends and 52 to 60 picks per inch, 16's warp, 16's weft, 2 & 2 matting, 2 & 2 twill and other weaves. Stripes of mercerised yarn and spun silk yarn introduced in many of them. Used for dress purposes, and shirtings. Also made at Bradford, 80 ends and 72 picks per inch, 18's warp, 18's weft, 2 & 2 twill, all cotton, or cotton warp and wool weft. The original fabric was an all-wool production. 60 ends and 60 picks per inch, 2/30's botany warp and weft. -
9 Chilaw Cloth
Cotton fabric made in Ceylon about 1860 and called "table linen." It was noted for its cheapness and durability at that time, but the European cheap cotton cloth has superseded the native product. -
10 Laminated Cloth
Cotton fabrics cut into narrow strips for many mechanical uses. the principal of which is for polishing. For polishing, practically only cotton cloth such as osnaburg, sheeting and light duck is used. -
11 Road Cloth
A number of roads in the United States have been laid with cotton cloth as a foundation for the asphalt. The preferred fabric is an osnaburg 75-in. to 90-in. wide, with 18 ends and 18 picks per inch. The sub-grade of the road is treated with a prime cast of tar-oil. After this is dry the cloth is placed directly upon it by unrolling. Each roll overlaps the previous one about 4-in. After that the distributor deposits a layer of hot black asphalt over the cloth. A road cloth used at Burnley, Lancashire, has 51/2 ends and 51/2 picks per inch, 4's warp, 4's weft, well sized. -
12 Kareya Cloth
Plain weave cotton cloth for use in Chota Nagpur. Woven in low reeds from 7's warp and weft, about 28-in. wide X 6 yards long. The cloth is strong and durable and used as a waist cloth. -
13 Fireproof Cloth
Cotton cloth treated with various chemical solutions is rendered flameproof, but only asbestos is truly fireproof. For fabrics that are not to be washed, sodium tungstate, borax, boric acid, aluminium acetate or sodium silicate are used mixed with some organic salt such as gypsum, chalk, Epsom salts, china clay, alum, etc. For fabrics that are to be washed such as flannelette - A soaking in a solution of sodium stannate and then in a solution of ammonium sulphate, dried and washed, will render the material flameproof. This process forms a more or less insoluble compound on the fibre. Other compounds used are aluminium sulphate and after-treatment with desodium hydrogen phosphate, to form aluminium phosphate on the fibre (see Asbestos cloth) -
14 Label Cloth
A heavily sized plain weave cotton cloth used for labels, tags, etc. The cloth is finished with a glazed surface. One quality is made 64 ends and 64 picks per inch, 32's T., 30's W., but there are numerous qualities. -
15 Sunshade Cloth
A plain weave cotton cloth used to make cheap sunshades. Woven from dyed yarns 24-in. to 26-in. wide. Different colours are usual to give shot effects. A standard cloth is made 25-in. 90 ends and 74 picks per inch, 60's Egyptian warp, 28's American weft. -
16 Vieley Cloth
Crepe weave cotton cloth of good quality shipped to the Near East, made from single and two-fold dyed yarns. Made 84 ends and 80 picks per inch, 30's warp, 20's weft, or 78 ends and 72 picks per inch, 2/40's warp, 2/40's weft. Brocade effects are sometimes woven on the cloth. -
17 Banner Cloth
Another name for bunting. A rather strong plain weave cotton cloth used for flags. No special quality. -
18 Bourre Cloth
A plain weave cotton cloth, woven in Asia Minor of white and coloured yams in stripes. -
19 Charkhona Cloth
Cotton cloth woven on hand looms in Bengal in white and black checks. -
20 Collar Cloth
A specially woven cotton cloth from which semi stiff collars are made. Two warps are necessary as one is consider ably longer than the other.
