αἰγίς, ίδος, ἡ, 1) Ziegenfell, Eur. Cycl. 360; als Kleid der libyschen Frauen Her. 4, 189, der daraus die Aegis der Athene ableitet. – 2) die αἰγίς des Zeus, nach Aristatchs Observation bei Hom. nur ein ὅπλον Διός, nicht der Athene gehörig, wie bei den folgenden Dichtern; daher heißt Zeus bei Hom. sehr okt αἰγίοχος, aber kein anderer Cott; nur ausnahmsweise gebrauchen die Aegis bei Hom. andere Götter, wie Zeus sie Iliad. 15, 229 dem Apollo giebt; sie erregt nach Aristarchs Observation Sturm und Finsterniß, u. ihr Name hängt mit ἀίσσω zusammen, wie auch αἰγίδες u. καταιγίδες die πνοαὶ αἱ κάτω ἀίσσουσαι heißen, Lehrs Aristarch. 192 Frlediaend. Ariston. 279. Hom. nur accus. αἰγίδα, Od. 22, 297 Iliad. 2, 447. 4, 167. 5, 738. 15, 229. 308. 318. 361. 17, 593. 18, 204. 21, 400 (v. l. ἀσπίδα, Aristarch las αἰγίδα, s. Scholl. Aristonic.); die Stelle Iliad. 24, 30 περὶ δ' αἰγίδι πάντα κάλυπτεν χρυσείῃ ist nach Aristarch unächt, welcher überdies αἰγίδα χρυσείην las, s. Scholl. Didym. u. Ariston. Der χαλκεύς Hephästos geb sie dem Zeus φορήμεναι ἐς φόβον ἀνδρῶν Iliad. 15, 308; geschüttelt erregt sie Flucht 15, 229. 318. 17, 593 Od. 22, 297. Sie wird beschrieben Iliad. 2, 447. 5, 738; ἐρεμνὴν αἰγ. Iliad. 4, 167, αἰγ. ϑυσσανόεσσαν 15, 229. 18, 204, αἰγ. ϑοῦριν δεινὴν ἀμφιδάσειαν ἀριπρεπέα 15, 308, αἰγ. ἐρίτιμον 15, 361, αἰγ. ϑυσσανόεσσαν μαρμαρέην 17, 593, αἰγ. ϑυσσανόεσσαν σμερδαλέην, ἣν οὐδὲ Διὸς δάμνησι κεραυνός 21, 400 (vgl.
