If prop. `flat cake, flat dough', for which esp. πέλανος as coin-name seems to argue (Solmsen KZ 42, 213), then the old connection (since Fick 1, 477) with Lat. plānus `flat, level' = Lith. plónas `thin', plóne `flan, cake' would be correct.
