5 θόλος
Grammatical information: f. (hell. m.; s. Schwyzer-Debrunner 32 n. 4, 34 n. 2)Meaning: `round building with conical roof, rotunda', `round bath' (Od.);Derivatives: θολίδιον (Attica). - θολία `round hat against the sun for women' (Theoc. 15, 39), also `chest with conical lid' (Poll.); cf. σαλία (σ- \< θ-) πλέγμα καλάθῳ ὅμοιον, ὅ ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς φοροῦσιν αἱ Λάκαιναι. οἱ δε θολία H.; s. also H. s. θαλιοποιοι [Latte corrects to *θαλλοκοποιοί]. - θολωτός `provided with θ., w. conical form' (Procop.), θολικός `id.' (Suid.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Technical word without explanation. One compares since Fick 1, 466 a word for `valley etc.', which is found in Germanic, Slavic, and Celtic, e. g. Goth. dal(s) m. or n. `φάραγξ, βόθυνος', OWNo. dalr `valley, arch', OCS dolъ `βάραθρον, λάκκος', Russ. dol `valley, lower part', Welsh dol f. `valley'. Prop. meaning then *`bowing, bending', from where `vault(ing)', resp. `hollow' (see Huisman KZ 71, 103); improbable. Often connected with θάλαμος, e. g. E. Maaß RhM 77, 1ff.; against this Wahrmann Glotta 19, 213. - Cf. Bq and Pok. 245f. - The variation α\/ο is typical of Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,677Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θόλος
