(Sp. model spelled same [komáðre] < Latin commatrem 'godmother')DARE: 1834. A godmother; one who serves as a sponsor at a Catholic baptism. The DRAE concurs. More loosely, a close female friend of a family. Cobos indicates it is the form of address a godmother uses with the mother of her godchild and vice versa. In the Southwest as well as in Andalusia and Mexico, a comadre may be a ranchwoman's close friend or neighbor.
