This competitive event was the precursor of the modern rodeo. According to Clark, it is still popular throughout the United States and involves traditional events, including wild riding tricks by women and horse-tripping. Santamaría notes that charreada comes from the verb charrear, which he defines as to act like a charro or to carry out the practices and exercises of the charro. The DRAE references charreada as a Mexican charro festival, and Islas indicates that it is a Mexican-style rodeo ( jaripeo). -
