Geococcyx californianus (лат); довольно крупная птица (длина тела до 60 см) с большими сильными ногами, длинным хвостом и короткими слабыми крыльями. Обитает на открытых равнинах в юго-западных районах США и в Мексике. Птица-символ [ state bird] штата Нью-Мексико. Персонаж популярной серии мультфильмов компании "Уорнер бразерс" [ Warner Bros.]. Название связано с тем, что ее можно видеть бегущей рядом с автомобилем вдоль дороги (отсюда и такие названия, как [prairie runner, runner bird]). Большую часть жизни проводит на земле, отчего ее иногда называют земляной кукушкой [ground cuckoo]. Обитает в прериях, в кустарниках чапарраля [ chaparral], отсюда названия [chaparral bird, chaparral cock], а также [prairie cock]. Питается змеями и ящерицами [lizard killer, rattlesnake killer]
