Клеточная органелла, входит в состав клеток большинства животных и грибов; во многих случаях Ц. является элементом митотического аппарата (в частности, в клетках имагинальных дисков дрозофил каждая Ц., окруженная перицентриолярным веществом, представляет собой цилиндрическое образование, состоящее из девяти триплетов микротрубочек); процесс воспроизводства Ц. автономен, хотя и связан по времени с синтетическим периодом митоза.
