Высокие концентрации Ю.г. отмечаются на стадии личинок; более низкие — в процессе метаморфоза у куколок; отсутствие Ю.г. соответствует дифференцировке взрослых особей (имаго). По химической природе Ю.г. — изопреноиды. Идентифицировано несколько типов Ю.г.: JH0, JH-I, JH-II, JH-III, JHB3 и метилфарнезоат. Впервые обнаружены в 1956 г. К. Ульямсом в брюшке самцов бабочки Hyalophora cecropia. У растений обнаружены антагонисты Ю.г. (прекоцены).
