1 Pile
The yarn which forms the face of fabrics such as velvets, velveteens, terry, etc. There are several varieties, viz., warp pile, weft pile, and knotted pile, and cut, loop or curl pile. Warp Pile is formed by an extra warp additional to and much longer than the ground warp. The pile threads are woven over wires which, when removed, leave loops either uncut or cut. This system is used for wool and silk velvets and many carpets, rugs, etc. Terry fabrics have looped pile formed by weaving without wires. Weft Pile is formed by weft floats which are cut after the cloth is woven to make the pile as seen in velveteens, corduroys, etc. Knotted Pile is made by hand by knotting short lengths of yarn to the warp threads. Design is formed by using pile threads of different colours. After the rug or carpet is woven the pile is trimmed to a uniform length. Curl Pile is produced by weaving two kinds of yarn in the same cloth, a non-shrinking yarn being floated loosely on the surface while a yarn that shrinks readily is interwoven closely. When the cloth is shrunk the unshrinking yarn forms curls on the surface, as in astrakhans. -
2 Carpet Wools
Low coarse wool, usually obtained from native or unimproved sheep and used in the manufacture of carpets. These wools have a " boardiness " and harshness necessary for durability of pile, i.e., for the prevention of " matting." British wool, particularly from the coarser-woolled type of improved sheep, is sometimes termed carpet wool and put to the same use as black-faced and other true carpet wools. -
3 Kalin Carpet
A pile carpet made in the Lahore and Amritsar prisons, with a strong cotton or hemp warp and weft and wool pile. The carpet is made by alternating one row of knots with one pick of weft. They are also made in Bihar and Orissa of all cotton to resemble the woollen pile carpet. Also known as Kalicha Carpets. -
4 Ladoga Carpet
Handsome hand-tufted carpets woven in Georgian style of designs, having a large field with faint design effects in leaf sprays and a beautiful border of floral designs in trails and festoons. The pile tufts are 11/2-in. long to give 5/8-in. depth and made of 6 threads of 7 skeins Saxony as one. Woven 25 tufts (5 X 5) per square inch = 25 X 6 X 2 = 300 pile ends. -
5 Bokhara Carpet
All-wool knotted carpet, with long pile. Ground is usually of bright red or reddish-brown with various ochre and other coloured patterns. The weave is not close. The designs are geometrical, the octagon being continuously used in all-over effects. Borders are usually in check effects. -
6 Sindh Carpet
A carpet made in Sindh, India, from coarse cotton warp and hemp weft and usually cowhair pile or knots. They are the cheapest, coarsest and least durable of Indian carpets. Formerly they were of high-class make both in material, design and colour, but have greatly deteriorated. The patterns are bold. -
7 Cinema Pile Carpets
The pile used for making the carpets for cinemas is short, but thick. About 4 in in depth is common The yarn is two-ply 3/14's worsted on a cotton ground. Dark grounds with large floral effects are usual to emphasise the fine velvety face.
