11 Card Cutting
To punch the holes in jacquard cards, according to specified designs, and in the order they are to operate the needles. There are two types of machines used, the plate and the piano. Plate Machine - The operation on this machine is slow, the plate being usually reset for every distinct pick in the design; but if there are many similar picks in the design it is obviously the quicker, as one setting of the plate will enable all similar picks to be cut in a few moments. Piano Machine - This machine feeds the card into the line of 8, 10, or 12 cutting punches controlled by the fingers, so that the fingers indicate the correct punches; one foot cuts and the other foot (or treadle) controls the movement forward of the card. A good cutter will cut from 100 up to 120 cards per hour (300's cards). The sketch shows this machine -
12 Card Fettlings
Wool waste removed from the card cylinders and is matted and dirty. Is not a remanufactured material, when, after re-scouring, is again carded. Usually this waste is used as a raw material by the woollen manufacturers. -
13 Card Filleting
The "count" of card wire is based on the number of points or crowns covering 1-in. in length and 4-in. in width of fillet. Then always 10 crowns or 20 points to the inch longitudinally of the sheet. Thus: - Number of crowns per sq. in. - 2.5 = count. Number of crowns X 2.5 = crowns per sq. in. Number of crowns X 5 = points per sq. in. Number of crowns X 720 = points per sq. feet -
14 Card Grinding
To maintain good carding it is necessary to grind periodically the various card covered members of the carding engine, viz swifts, doffers, workers and strippers. For the purpose of grinding swifts and doffers a portable gringing roller is used this roller is covered either with emery applied directly on the roller surface by this method termed " solid " covering, or with emery filleting, which is secured in the flanges at the ends of the roller to facilitate the latter method of covering, which is now very widely adopted a specially adapted roller is constructed. -
15 Card Clothing
The name used for the clothing of a carding machine, and it consists of a foundation material in which wires are fastened. These wires do the work of carding the cotton. The foundation is secured to the revolving cylinder and is usually made of cotton and woollen cloth and rubber. This cloth is very compactly woven in three layers firmly cemented together, with rubber face to give elasticity to the wires. The wire teeth are inserted in pairs - The coupling bar of each pair is known as the " crown," the carding end of each tooth is termed the " point." Each tooth is bent near the middle, and the bend is the " knee " (see Filleting) -
