В отличие от денежного рынка, где обращаются краткосрочные средства, рынок капиталов в своей деятельности должен опираться на хорошо организованные структуры, такие, как фондовые биржи. Тем не менее единственным четким отличием одного рынка от другого является то, что рынки капитала обычно выступают источником заемных средств для бизнеса, финансовых институтов и правительств, а денежный рынок, как правило, удовлетворяет текущие потребности в финансировании оборотного капитала. Примечательно, что Раймон Барр в своей работе «Политическая экономия» определяет marché des capitaux как всеохватывающий рынок, эквивалентный английскому financial market, а marché monétaire трактуется как marché des capitaux à court terme (= денежный рынок). Термин marché financier приравнивается к термину marché des capitaux à long terme(=рынок капиталов).
