(Sp. model spelled same [ágwa] < Latin aquam 'water')As Blevins notes, this term may refer to water or rain. The plural aguas is the usual form for rain. No doubt the cowboy working in the borderlands among Mexicans used this term in searching for a source of drinking water for himself for the cattle under his care. Several common compounds exist, including: agua caliente or aguas calientes(Sp. model spelled same [ágwa] [see above] and [kaljénte] < Latin calentis; the plural agglutinated Aguascalientes is the name of a state in northern Mexico. As Carlisle observes, this compound means "literally 'hot water(s),' now a place name used to refer to many settlements in the West near Hot Springs [sic]."
