It can be used to cover the head and shoulders or as a carrying instrument. Watts indicates that this term is used in the Southwest, especially western Texas and California. The DRAE references it simply as a woman's mantilla or veil. Santamaría defines it as a large square shawl used by middle-class and poor women to cover their shoulders.
