The names of the months were inspired by the changing seasons, the weather and the harvest: vendémiaire, brumaire, frimaire, nivôse, pluviôse, ventôse, germinal, floréal, prairial, messidor, thermidor, fructidor. The calendar was officially replaced by the Gregorian calendar in 1806.
