χιτών, ῶνος: tunic. The χιτών was like a shirt, but without sleeves, woollen, and white. It was worn by both men and women, next the body, and confined by a girdle, Od. 14.72. (See the cut, representing Achilles—clothed in the χίτών—taking leave of Peleus. Cf. also No. 55). There were also long tunics, see ἑλκεχίτων.
