       Un blog (appelé aussi blogue ou weblog) est un "carnet de bord sur internet" (Petit Robert) ou encore un journal en ligne tenu par une personne ou un groupe. A usage professionnel ou personnel, il permet de tenir son journal sur le web via un logiciel très simple d’utilisation. Ce journal est ordonné par ordre chronologique (du plus récent au plus ancien) et il est actualisé au gré du rédacteur, d’heure en heure ou bien une fois par mois. Le premier blog apparaît en 1997. Le blog pointblog.com propose un abc du blogging donnant des informations pratiques, y compris sur la manière de créer son blog. En 2004, Le Monde.fr, site du quotidien Le Monde, lance ses propres blogs, "un formidable format d’expression journalistique qui permet un dialogue quasi-instantané avec son lecteur", selon Yann Chapellon, directeur du Monde interactif. En juillet 2005, il y aurait plus de 14 millions de blogs dans le monde, et 80.000 nouveaux blogs par jour. En décembre 2006, le site spécialisé Technorati recense 65 millions de blogs, et 175.000 nouveaux blogs par jour. D’après la société Gartner, la durée de vie moyenne d’un blog est de trois mois, et on recense 30 millions de blogueurs actifs. Toujours d’après Gartner, le nombre de blogueurs pourrait atteindre les 100 millions au cours du premier semestre 2007, un nombre qui marquerait le pic d’un engouement phénoménal depuis quelques années, pour redescendre ensuite et atteindre une vitesse de croisière. Certains blogs sont consacrés aux photos (photoblogs ou blogs photo), à la musique (audioblogs, blogs audio ou podcasts) ou aux vidéos (vlogs ou blogs vidéo).
