Le terme "bit" est l’acronyme de "binary digit". Le bit est une unité de numération binaire (0 ou 1) utilisée pour le codage informatique de caractères (lettres, chiffres, ponctuation, symboles), par exemple l’ASCII (American standard code for information interchange). Un ensemble de 8 bits forme un octet. Le kilobit (Kbit) est une unité de mesure équivalant à 1.000 ou 1.024 bits. Le mégabit (Mbit) est une unité de mesure équivalant à un million de bits. Le gigabit (Gbit) est une unité de mesure équivalant à un milliard de bits. Le térabit (Tbit) est une unité de mesure équivalant à 1.000 gigabits. L’abréviation "bit/s" ou "bps" (bit par seconde) désigne une unité de débit de transmission des données. -
