Possibly allied to the root of Celtic bervô, seethe, Old Irish tipra, well, Gaelic tobar, English burn. Cf. German brunnen kresse, water-cress, i.e. "well" cress. The dictionaries and old glossaries (Cormac, etc.) give bir, bior, as water or well. -
