Проводится с 1934 по инициативе композитора и дирижера Г. Хэдли [Hadley, Henry K.]. С 1936 Тэнглвуд является летней резиденцией Бостонского симфонического оркестра [ Boston Symphony Orchestra]. В 1938 по проекту архитекторов Э. Сааринена [ Saarinen, Eero] и Дж. Франца [Franz, Joseph] в поместье был сооружен музыкальный театр-шатер на 5 тыс. мест. В 1940 Бостонский оркестр учредил Беркширский музыкальный центр [Berkshire Music Center] и летнюю музыкальную школу, директором которой стал С. Куссевицкий [ Koussevitsky, Serge], а его помощником А. Копленд [ Copland, Aaron]. Фестиваль длится восемь недель, за это время проходят около 25 концертов и серия мастер-классов. По пятницам за два часа до начала концерта обладатели билетов приглашаются на бесплатную "прелюдию к выходным дням" ["Weekend Prelude"] - программу коротких выступлений солистов. Концерты также проводятся по субботним вечерам и в воскресный полдень. Каждую субботу утром Бостонский оркестр проводит открытые репетиции, на которые публика допускается за небольшую плату. Эти средства идут в пенсионный фонд оркестра.
