    ζύ̄μη

    Meaning: `leaven, beer-yeast' (Arist.).
    Compounds: Compp., e. g. ζυμ-ουργός `who prepares beer-yeast' (pap.), ἄ-ζυμος `without beer-yeast, unleavened' (Pl., Hp.).
Derivatives: ζυμίτης ( ἄρτος) `leavened bread' (Cratin. 99 [?], Hp., X.; Redard Les noms grecs en - της 89); ζυμώδης `like leaven' (Arist.). Denomin. verbs: 1. ζυμόομαι, - όω `be leavened; ferment' (Hp., Plu.) with ζύμωσις `fermentation' (Pl. Ti. 66b usw.), ζύμωμα `fermented mass' (Pl. Ti. 74b, Nic.); ζυμ-ωτός `fermented', - ωτικός `bringing in fermentattion' (Diocl. Med.). 2. ζυμίζω `be like yeast' (Dsc.).
    Origin: IE [Indo-European] [507] *i̯uHs- `mix, bring in movement?'
Etymology: Like ἅλ-μη `salt water' a. o. (Chantraine Formation 148) ζύμη may be derived from a noun, from an IE word for `fermentation, soup', Skt. yūṣ-, Lat. iūs n., i.e. IE *i̯ūs-mā (on the phonetics Schwyzer 333). Other derivv. (or reshapings) of this s-stem are Skt. yūṣ-án- (suppletiv.), yūṣ-á- `id.', Lith. jū́š-ė `fish-soup, bad soup', Slav., e. g. Russ. uch-á (old u-diphthong) `(fermented) fish-soup', Finn.-PNord. juusto, ONo. ostr `cheese' (PGerm. *i̯us-ta-) a. o. At the basis is prob. a verb w. the meaning `mix', Skt. yáuti, Lith. jáuju, jáuti (jaũti). Further details in W.-Hofmann s. 2. iūs, Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. uchá. - S. also ζωμός.
