Термич. процесс окускования мелких материалов (руды, рудных концентратов, содержащих металлы отходов и др.) — составных частей металлургич. шихты путем их спекания с целью придания формы и свойств, необходимых для плавки. Спекание - непоср. слипание отдельных нагретых частиц шихты при поверхностном их размягчении либо в результате образования легкоплавких соединений, связывающих частицы при остывании агломерата. Тепло для спекания возникает от горения углеродистого топлива, добавляемого в кол-ве 6-7 мае. % к аглошихте, либо от окисления сульфидов, если а. подвергаются сернистые рудные концентраты.
Осн. исх. материалы для а.: мелкая сырая руда (8-10 мм) и ее концентрат, а также топливо (коксовая и антрацитовая мелочь до 3 мм), флюс (известняк и доломит до 3 мм), в отд. случаях - мелкие отходы (колошниковая пыль, окалина и др.). А. чаще ведут на колосниковых решетках с просасыванием воздуха сверху вниз сквозь шихту на решетке при последовательном горении топлива в ее слоях. На рис. схематично приведены движение зоны горения и распределение темп-ры по высоте спекаемого слоя в ходе а. в чашевой аглоустановке. Для устойчивого процесса горения и получения качеств. агломерата шихта должна быть максимально однородной и газопроницаемой. Более 95 % агломерата используется в ЧМ для плавки в доменных и ферросплавных печах. В ЦМ агломерат применяется в Аl-, Ni-, Pb-произ-вах. Впервые пром. произв-во железорудного агломерата было освоено в начале XX в. (США).
