    Запрет на производство, транспортировку и продажу алкогольных напитков, за исключением медицинских и научных целей. Впервые такие запреты действовали в 13 штатах в 1846-55, но затем были отменены властями этих штатов или объявлены неконституционными. На рубеже веков в США сложилось влиятельное движение сторонников трезвости [ Temperance Movement]. К 1905 "сухой закон" действовал в Канзасе, Мэне, Небраске и Северной Дакоте. К началу первой мировой войны такие запреты разной степени строгости действовали уже в 26 штатах. После вступления США в войну возникла реальная необходимость сберегать запасы зерна, и активная лоббистская деятельность таких групп, как Антиалкогольная лига [ Anti-Saloon League], привела в итоге к принятию федеральных мер по запрету производства спиртных напитков. В 1917 Конгресс принял и направил на утверждение штатов проект Восемнадцатой поправки [ Eighteenth Amendment] к Конституции США о введении "сухого закона". 8 сентября 1917 в США было прекращено производство виски, а с 1 мая 1919 - и пива. С 1 июля 1919 была полностью запрещена продажа спиртных напитков на территории США, а 16 января 1920 вступила в силу Восемнадцатая поправка. Меры по проведению положений поправки в жизнь были предусмотрены федеральным законом Волстеда [ Volstead Act]. Однако вскоре стало очевидно, что эти меры абсолютно не популярны и применение закона наносит серьезный ущерб экономике. Следствием принятия "сухого закона" стало беспрецедентное усиление организованной преступности, связанной с незаконной торговлей спиртным [ bootlegging], появилось множество подпольных баров [ speakeasy]; бюджет страны серьезно пострадал от непоступления налогов на алкогольные напитки. Под давлением общественного мнения в декабре 1933 "сухой закон" был отменен Двадцать первой поправкой [ Twenty-first Amendment].     Общенациональная кампания протестантских организаций за запрещение употребления спиртных напитков началась в первой половине XIX в. В 1826 было основано Американское общество трезвости [American Temperance Society], которое начало сбор письменных обязательств граждан воздерживаться от употребления алкоголя. Созданные в 1840-х вашингтонские общества трезвенников [Washington Temperance Societies] развернули "крестовый поход" против алкоголя, проводя митинги, подобные религиозным собраниям "возрожденцев" [ revival meeting]. В 1851 штат Мэн первым принял "сухой закон". В 1869 возникла Партия "сухого закона" [The Prohibition party], которая даже выставила своего кандидата на президентских выборах.
