Втайне от остальных Кэррингтон идет на эксперимент: поливает плазмой семена, найденные в оторванной руке существа; в течение нескольких часов они вырастают и начинают дышать, издавая звуки, похожие на писк новорожденного.Тварь ранит одного ученого и убивает 2 других. Ее запирают в теплице, забаррикадировав дверь. Военные предполагают, что это существо – разведчик, присланный на Землю в преддверии грядущего вторжения на планету. Согласно этой гипотезе, инопланетяне питаются кровью землян. Принято решение уничтожить тварь, облив ее нефтью, поскольку пули не причиняют ей ни малейшего вреда. Позднее ее заманивают в ловушку. Кэррингтон пытается помешать военным и установить контакт с тварью, однако та ранит его.
