Fianna Fáil wurde 1926 gegründet, um sich dem Anglo-Irish Treaty - anglo-irischen Abkommen von 1921 zu widersetzen, durch das die Irish Republic den Status eines dominion - Herrschaftsgebiet innerhalb des Commonwealth erhielt. Die Partei kam 1932 unter Eamon de Valera an die Macht und stellt seither fast ununterbrochen die Regierung.
