(Sp. model spelled same [alfalfa] < Arabic al-fasfasa)OED: 1880s. A plant of the genus Medicago sativa. When in bloom it bears cloverlike purple flowers. The plant is widely used as animal fodder and as a cover crop. Spanish sources concur. It made its way to the Southwest from Mexico, having been originally introduced by the Spanish. Also known as lucern(e). It is still in common use among cowmen and ranchers today.
