Высокотв. кристаллич., зернистые или порошкообразные вещ-ва для механич. обработки металлов, керамич. материалов, горных пород, минералов, стекла и др. До конца XIX в. использовались только естеств. а. м. (кремень, наждак, гранат, пемза, корунд, алмаз), а затем наиб, широко стали применяться искусств, а. м. (электрокорунд, карбид кремния, карбид бора, монокорунд, синтетич. алмаз и др.). Осн. хар-ки A.M.: тв., прочность и вязкость; форма абразивного зерна; абразивная способность; зернистость. Напр., тв., ГН/м2: кварца 11 — 11,3, электрокорунда 18—24, алмаза 84,25—100. Сопротивление а. м. сжатию в неск. раз выше, чем сопротивление растяжению и изгибу. По абразивной способности а. м. располагается в след, порядке: алмаз, кубич. карбид бора, карбид кремния, монокорунд, электрокорунд, наждак, кремень.
А. м. используется в виде зерен, скрепл. связкой в раз-ные по форме и назначению абразивные инструменты, или нанес, на гибкую основу (ткань, бумагу и др.) в виде шлифовальной бумаги, а тж. в несвяз. состоянии в виде порошков, паст и суспензий.
