Was it not odd that those who had received these allegedly smuggled rubles were on trial, while the persons who had brought them across the frontier had not even been called as witnesses? The reason was all too obvious, if any of these foreigners had been questioned, he would immediately have been able to prove that he had obtained the rubles from the State Bank, and the whole wicked farce would have burst like a soap bubble (1a).
