По своему обыкновению Хичкок до такой степени опутывает зрителя нитями сюжета, что сюжет становится для него так же загадочен, как сама реальность. Восхищаться фильмом (несомненно, принадлежащим к числу самых восхитительных произведений кинематографа) и анализировать его – означает даже не столько анализировать автора, сколько анализировать самого себя в психологическом и психоаналитическом понимании этого слова. Головокружение, при всей нашей любви и всем обожании, остается картиной настолько личной, что приглашает скорее к молчаливым раздумьям, нежели к обсуждению, словно интимный дневник, который не должен был попадаться на глаза. В фильме не одна, а несколько путеводных нитей, и все пересекаются до бесконечности: преступление (лишающее того, кто в нем замешан, всякого будущего), некрофилия, иллюзия, влюбленность. На тему влюбленности Хичкок сплел бесчисленное количество вариаций. В его творчестве любовь часто связана с чувством подчиненности, даже собственной неполноценности. Здесь это чувство в тот или иной момент сюжета испытывают все персонажи; Мидж становится его карикатурным (и совершенно отчаянным) воплощением. Суть истории 2 главных героев Головокружения в том, что даже в любви им не суждено встретиться. Стоит Фергюсону избавиться от обманчивых иллюзий, как он убивает ту, кого любит (таков приблизительный смысл финальной сцены). Сделав почти все возможное, чтобы снова встретиться с Фергюсоном, Мэдлин-Джуди его теряет. И он, и она теряют друг друга прежде, чем находят. Нравственность конечно же и преступление, в котором участвовала Джуди, навеки останутся непреодолимой стеной между ними. Эта трагическая игра в прятки объединяет крайнюю чувственность и физическую близость персонажей (актерская игра Ким Новак признана одной из самых животных в американском кинематографе) с не менее крайней рассудочностью, поскольку фильм рассказывает также и об усиленных попытках Фергюсона осмыслить и понять суть Мэдлин-Джуди, которая сбегает от него в мир мертвых, как раз когда он почти уловил эту суть. Чтобы дать зрителю возможность прочувствовать (но не постичь целиком) эту историю о головокружении и падении, которые оказываются сильнее любви, Хичкок использовал весь арсенал своих технических трюков, причем некоторые он обдумывал 15 лет (эффект головокружения на колокольне). Они похожи на рифмы в стихотворении – видимые, различимые, нарочито заметные, но призванные раствориться в финале в душераздирающей магии той музыки, что сложилась в том числе и благодаря им.
