Триест Город в Сев. Италии, административный центр пров. Триест и области Фриули-Венеция-Джулия. 231 тыс. жителей (1991). Порт в Триестском зал. Адриатического м. Машиностроение (в т. ч. судостроение), нефтеперерабатывающая, химическая, цементная, пищевая промышленность. Университет. В древности римская колония. В средние века значительный торговый центр, за который шла борьба различных государств. С 14 в. в основном был владением Австрии; после 1-й мировой войны по Сен-Жерменскому договору 1919 отошел к Италии. В 1943-1945, во время 2-й мировой войны, – под немецкой оккупацией. В 1945-47 управлялся англо-американскими военными властями; в 1947-54 Триест с небольшим округом составлял т. н. Свободную территорию Триеста под контролем этих властей. По итало-югославскому договору 1954 (при участии Великобритании и США) Триест и территории к западу от него перешли к Италии, а территории к востоку от Триеста – к Югославии (в настоящее время – к Словении). -
