  • 6 Tejano

(Sp. model spelled same [texáno] < Tejas or Texas (see below) and the Spanish suffix -ano 'pertaining to or originating from')
Carlisle: 1844. Originally a Texan of Mexican descent; however, in the second half of the nineteenth century it came to mean any Texan, but generally one of Anglo descent. Santamaría concurs that it means 'from Texas.' Cobos indicates that in New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish, it is used to refer to a white stranger in an uncomplimentary fashion, whether he is from Texas or from some place farther east. Gringo is an equivalent term. More recently, it has again been applied with its original meaning, as in Tejano (Tex-Mex) music. In northern Mexico the term can also refer to a cowboy hat and is used to distinguish it from the traditional sombrero that the charro or vaquero wore.

  • 10 adobero

(Sp. model spelled same [aðoβéro] < adobe [see above] and the agentive suffix -ero 'occupation, profession, job')
Hoy's definition is correct: "a maker of adobes." Hendrickson also notes that the phrase "adobe-maker" was used pejoratively to refer to Mexicans.
        'dobe wall
According to Watts (who, in turn, refers to Adams), this expression meant to put a man up against a wall and shoot him, and probably originated in the 1870s when Texan cattle rustlers (or retrievers) were caught and executed in Mexico and the Southwest.

  • 11 querencia

(Sp. model spelled same [kerénsja] < querer < Latin quaerere 'to seek; inquire; request')
The place where a person (or animal) was born. Also a favorite spot or 'haunt.' Watts, quoting Dobie, says that Texan cowboys use the term to refer to a longhorn's birthplace or a place the cow persistently returns to. The OED notes that in bullfighting it refers to the place in the ring where a bull takes his stand, or his "stamping ground." The DRAE indicates that it refers to the inclination or tendency of a person or animal to return to the place where s/he was raised or has become accustomed to. It may also refer to the place itself. Santamaría quotes Valle, who reports that this term refers (in Nicaragua) to the native territory of an animal, meaning the place where it was raised, where it has become accustomed to graze, and whose pathways and landmarks it knows and remembers instinctively. By extension, it is also used for the place a person calls home and where his or her loved ones reside.
