A silk dress fabric, made with cotton back and woven by the natives of Punjab and Sind, India. The name means " permitted " in vernacular, with reference to the law forbidding Mohammedans to wear pure animal fibre (silk) garments. The cotton back being next to the skin the fabric is worn by orthodox Mohammedans. The most customary fabric is made with very highly finished satin stripes, and at Ranjore, Hyderabad and Trichinopoly it is made with gold figures. The fabric is now made of all mercerized cotton imported from England.
