Через два года после основания здесь было более 2,5 тыс. жителей, в основном квакеров [ Quakers]; город стал конечным пунктом путешествия многих переселенцев различных вероисповеданий из Европы. В 1701 Филадельфия получила статус города. Филадельфия - один из первых американских городов, построенных по единому плану.
