Пуатье Город во Франции, административный центр департамента Вьенна и главный город исторической области Пуату. 103 тыс. жителей (1982, с пригородами). Машиностроение, текстильная, химическая, кожевенная, пищевая промышленность. Университет. Баптистерий Сен-Жан (4 в.), романский собор Сен-Пьер (12-13 вв., достройки 13-15 вв.). Около Пуатье в 507 король франков Хлодвиг разбил вестготов, что обеспечило захват франками Юго-Зап. Галлии. 4.10.732 при Пуатье франкская тяжелая конница Карла Мартелла нанесла поражение арабам, заставив их отойти к Пиренеям. 19.9.1356 около Пуатье во время Столетней войны английские войска "Черного принца" (главным образом лучники) разгромили французское рыцарское войско Иоанна II Доброго, который попал в плен. -
