Καισάρεια, ας, ἡ (Καισαρία a wrong accent; s. W-S. §5, 13c end) Caesarea.① Καισάρεια ἡ Φιλίππου C. Philippi, a city at the foot of Mt. Hermon, once known as Paneas, rebuilt by Philip the Tetrarch and made an important city; he named it Caesarea in honor of Tiberius Caesar (Jos., Ant. 18, 28, Bell. 2, 168) Mt 16:13. αἱ κῶμαι Κ. τῆς Φ. are villages near the city Mk 8:27.—Schürer II 169–71 (sources and lit.); Dalman, Orte3 (index).② Καισάρεια without further designation is Caesarea ‘by the sea’ (Philo, Leg. ad Gai. 305; Jos., Bell. 7, 23 [here both Caesareas together]), located south of Mt.
