abbr(= Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa) Hist the People's Republic of PolandCultural note: PRL PRL is the abbreviation of the Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa (the People's Republic of Poland). This is how the Polish state was referred to from the post-war era to the collapse of communism in 1989. Nowadays the word PRL is often used as a synonym for the numerous shortcomings of that period: aesthetic blandness, shortages and queues. -ej Polskiej, -e PolskiefCultural note: rzeczpospolita Rzeczpospolita means ‘republic’, but in Poland the term is used exclusively to refer to the Polish state. The first Rzeczpospolita existed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when Poland formed a union with Lithuania. The second Rzeczpospolita took place during the inter-war period, and the third Rzeczpospolita began after the collapse of the PRL in 1989. In 2005 the ruling party announced the beginning of the fourth Rzeczpospolita.
