NeXT est à la fois le nom d’une société informatique créée en 1985 par Steve Jobs, l’un des fondateurs de la société Apple, et le nom de l’ordinateur personnel (poste de travail) développé par la société en 1988. "C’est sur une machine NeXT sous (le système d’exploitation, ndlr) NeXTStep que Tim Berners-Lee inventa le World Wide Web alors qu’il travaillait au CERN (Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire, ndlr). NeXT, au bord de la faillite, fut racheté en 1996 par Apple Computer, qui recherchait un nouveau système d’exploitation pour ses ordinateurs Macintosh.
