Thurneysen thinks the Gadelic words are borrowed from the Welsh naws, from gnaws ( See gnàth). Stokes gives *nomso- as stem for Gadelic alone; the Welsh he regards as from gnâ, as above. The ideal stem would be *nâsto-, root nâd.II -
