Слово mews в настоящее время встречается в адресах (Kensington Mews, Hyde Park Mews) или в словосочетании a mews flat. В XIX в. the mews называли конюшню, где обеспеченные лондонцы содержали своих лошадей с кучерами и каретами. Позже в mews размещались автомашины и шофёры. Большинство этих помещений уже давно превратились в квартиры. Сначала mews были клетками для линяющих соколов (от латинского mutare — менять). В XVII в. the King's Mews, где содержали королевских соколов, а позже лошадей, располагались там, где сейчас находится Национальная галерея на Трафальгарской площади. -
