Административный центр [ county seat] округа Отсиго [Otsego County] (с 1791). Летний курорт на южном берегу озера Отсиго [Otsego Lake]. Родина бейсбола [ baseball] - долгое время считалось, что идея игры, созданной в 1839, пришла в голову военному А. Даблдэю [Doubleday, Abner] именно здесь, сейчас эту легенду оспаривают. Национальный музей бейсбола [ National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum] (1939), Музей фермерства [Farmer's Museum], Музей под открытым небом "Деревенские перекрестки" [Village Crossroads], опера, Дом искусств Фенимора [Fenimore Art House], где находится штаб-квартира Исторической ассоциации штата Нью-Йорк [New York State Historical Association]. Здесь жил и похоронен Ф. Купер [ Cooper, James Fenimore], описавший район в своих романах о Кожаном Чулке [ Leatherstocking]. Основан в конце 80-х годов XVIII в. судьей У. Житель американского Фронтира [ Frontier], неграмотный, но благородный и прямодушный охотник и следопыт, друг индейцев, недовольный наступлением цивилизации на заповедные леса. Образ Бампо и его верного друга индейца Чингачгука [Chingachgook], "последнего из могикан", стали символом "естественной" Америки, еще не развращенной цивилизацией. Купер, Джеймс Фенимор (1789-1851), писатель. Род. в Берлингтоне ( штат Нью-Джерси). Его роман «Шпион» [‘The Spy', 1821], стал первым бестселлером, превзойдя все издававшиеся до тех пор книги. Создал цикл романов о жизни американского фронтира. Романы Купера не утратили своей популярности и в наши дни, став классикой мировой детской литературы‘Leatherstocking Tales' (пенталогия о Кожаном Чулке, в том числе ‘Last of the Mohicans' («Последний из могикан», 1826))
