    English civil engineer, inventor of the railway semaphore signal.

    Gregory's father was Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.C.H. Gregory himself, after working for Robert Stephenson, was appointed Engineer to the London \& Croydon Railway in 1839. On it, at New Cross in 1841, he installed a semaphore signal derived from signalling apparatus used by the Royal Navy; two hinged semaphore arms projected either side from the top of a post, signalling to drivers of trains in each direction of travel. In horizontal position each arm signified "danger", an arm inclined at 45° meant "caution" and the vertical position, in which the arms disappeared within a slot in the post, meant "all right". Gregory's signal was the forerunner of semaphore signals adopted on railways worldwide. In 1843 Gregory invented the stirrup frame: signal arms were connected to stirrups that were pushed down by the signalman's foot in order to operate them, while the points were operated by levers. The stirrups were connected together to prevent conflicting signals from being shown. This was a predecessor of interlocking. In 1846 Gregory became Engineer to the Bristol \& Exeter Railway, where in 1848 he co-operated with W.B. Adams in the development and operation of the first self-propelled railcar. He later did civil engineering work in Italy and France, was Engineer to the Somerset Central and Dorset Central railways and became Consulting Engineer for the government railways in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Cape of Good Hope, Straits Settlements and Trinidad.

    «Открыть кавычки... закрыть кавычки». Формула, используемая при диктовке, чтобы обозначить прямую речь. Её используют как в речи, так и на письме, когда передают (или иронически имитируют, что передают) отрывки из цитируемой речи или письма. Она стала широко употребляться в 1930-е гг., но ещё раньше её стали употреблять журналисты, когда сообщали по телефону какие-либо новости: He added comma quote my government would not comma on any account comma consider such a solution unquote stop. — Он добавил запятая открыть кавычки моё правительство не будет запятая в любом случае запятая рассматривать возможность подобного решения вопроса закрыть кавычки точка. Альтернативно употребляется open inverted commas и close inverted commas, но укороченный вариант сейчас более популярен.

Sorpren dentemente, aunque tal vez debido al exito de la serie del famoso espia, se hace cargo de la produccion de las peliculas consagradas a otro espia de ficcion, Matt Helm, encarnado por Dean Martin. Las tres entregas son The Silencers (Phil Karlson, 1966), Matt Helm, agente muy especial (Murderer’s Row, Henry Levin, 1967), y Emboscada a Matt Helm (The Ambushers, Henry Levin, 1968). Polaco de nacimiento, aborda esporadicamente la direccion de sus proyectos, entre los que cabe citar su colaboracion con Burgess Meredith en El hombre de la Torre Eiffel (The Man On the Eiffel Tour, 1949), y New Mexico, un western oficialmente dirigido por Irving Reis. Tanto este filme como Slaughter Trail son dos estimables peliculas de genero.

       Nacido en Madera, California, estudia la carrera de Derecho, que no llego a terminar, y se alista en el ejercito. Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se empieza a interesar por el teatro. En la Universidad del Sur de California consigue culminar los estudios de Arte Dramatico y empieza su andadura teatral en Los Angeles. En 1949 es contratado por la cadena de television KLAC, donde recorrio toda la escala social de trabajos, que desembocaron en un contrato con la Allied Artists de Walter Wanger. El medio cinematografico en el que ahora se desarrolla su actividad le proporciona a Peckinpah, entre otras cosas, algunos amigos influyentes como el actor Joel McCrea o el director Charles Marquis Warren. Este le proporciona la oportunidad de escribir para la serie de television Gunsmoke; aquel sera uno de los dos protagonistas de su segunda pelicula, Duelo en la alta sierra. Llega a dirigir episodios televisivos antes de que la Fox le permita rodar su primer largometraje, que es un fracaso de publico y critica. No obstante, sus exitos televisivos le permiten obtener un contrato de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer para rodar su segunda pelicula. Pero fue en el rodaje de la tercera, Mayor Dundee, en el que se iniciaria la maldicion que parecio pesar sobre los hombros de Peckinpah, que convertiria, en lo sucesivo, cada rodaje en una aventura que nunca se sabia si alcanzaria el exito. Por ejemplo, fue apartado de la direccion de El rey del juego (The Cincinnati Kid, Norman Jewison, 1965) que, con toda seguridad, el hubiera elevado a una altura de la que, por desgracia, carecio el filme en su estado definitivo, pese al magnifico guion que le sirvio de soporte. Saltando de productora a productora, incluso de pais a pais, ya que paso un par de anos en Gran Bretana, donde rueda Perros de paja (Straw Dogs, 1971), uno de sus filmes mas conocidos y apreciados, llega a conformar una esplendida filmografia que solo baja de nivel en sus ultimas peliculas. Sam Peckinpah es el maximo representante del western crepuscular. Su primera pelicula, The Deadly Companions, pertenece al genero, y a el dedico lo mejor de sus esfuerzos, radicalmente incomprendidos por parte de los productores. Duelo en la alta sierra es un filme de un vigor inusual, lleno de nostalgia, riguroso y bello como los paisajes por los que discurre. Mayor Dundee es la gran obra frustrada del director. En el estado en que la dejaron los responsables de Columbia sigue siendo una pelicula soberbia, esbozo de la obra definitiva que pudo llegar a ser. Grupo salvaje es la pelicula emblematica de Peckinpah. Todas las discusiones acerca del uso de la violencia en sus filmes arrancan de esta amarga reflexion sobre la vida y los seres humanos. Una filmografia muy rica, como se ha indicado, y no solo en el ambito del western, acompana a la peripecia vital del ultimo cineasta clasico.
