Основан в 1904 после прокладки железнодорожной ветки от Майами, статус города с 1913. Был почти полностью разрушен в августе 1992 в результате разрушительного урагана "Эндрю" [Hurricane Andrew].2) Поселок [ borough] на юго-западе штата Пенсильвания, юго-восточный пригород г. Питсбурга [ Pittsburgh], на р. Мононгахила [ Monongahela River]. 3,5 тыс. жителей (2000). В 1881 компания "Бессемер стил" [Bessemer Steel] построила здесь доменные цеха и сталелитейный завод "Хомстед (стил) уоркс" [Homestead (Steel) Works], создав вокруг них поселок компании [ company town] Эмити-Хомстед [Amity Homestead]. Его развитие было тесно связано с развитием сталелитейной "империи" Э. Карнеги [ Carnegie, Andrew]. На заводе были произведены колонны и перекрытия, использовавшиеся при строительстве небоскреба "Эмпаир стейт билдинг" [ Empire State Building]. Здесь в июле 1892 произошли столкновения рабочих и охраны предприятия, нанятой руководством завода через Национальное детективное агентство Пинкертона [ Pinkerton National Detective Agency], вошедшие в историю как Хомстедская стачка [ Homestead Strike]. Завод закрылся в 1986, в 1993-94 постройки на его территории были снесены. Район, где раньше находился завод, сейчас административно входит в состав соседнего поселка Манхолл [Munhall]. -
