(Цицерон. О гадании, кн. II, 24 - I в. до н.э.) Augurenlächeln (Cicero. Von der Weissagung). Die römischen Beamten ließen sich bei wichtigen Staatsangelegenheiten von Auguren (Priestern) beraten, die vorgaben, aus dem Verhalten der Vögel den Willen der Götter und die Zukunft erforschen zu können. Zu diesen Zwecken wurden auch etruskische Priester (Haruspices) zu Rate gezogen, die aus den Eingeweiden der Opfertiere weissagten. Cicero wendet sich in seiner Schrift gegen diesen Aberglauben und führt die witzige Äußerung Catos an, der sagte, er wundere sich, dass ein Haruspex, wenn er einem anderen Huruspex begegne, das Lachen unterdrücken könne. Daher gilt das Augurenlächeln als spöttisches Lächeln des Wissens und Einverständnisses unter Eingeweihten. -
