Han·se <-> [ʼhanzə] fHanseatic league¿Kultur? The Hanse or Hanseatic League was originally an association of towns lying on important trade routes. The aim of these Hansestädte was to protect and control trade. The German Hanse had a trade monopoly on the Baltic for 200 years. Today, there are still seven north German towns which call themselves Hansestädte: Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck, Greifswald, Rostock, Stralsund and Wismar. -
