GARTER (Jarretiere, French)In the 16th and 17th centuries the garter was a most prominent attire of men, but it would be difficult to give the earliest date when it was worn. In the time of James I, they were small sashes of silk, tied in a large bow, having the ends of point lace. In 1661 there is mention of " the diamond buckles worn by women of fashion with their garters." Today the garter is a narrow band, generally of elastic enclosed in cotton, silk, etc., but the suspender is taking its place. -
