•• Слово этнический до недавнего времени употреблялось у нас редко, с несколько «фольклорным» оттенком значения. В последнее время английское словоупотребление оказывает влияние на русское. Например, этнические чистки (ethnic cleansing). Пожалуй, раньше сказали бы чистки по национальному признаку. Переводчику следует быть осторожным при переводе на английский: слово национальный, как правило, предпочтительно переводить не national, а ethnic. Еще одно предостережение: в русском языке слово националистический имеет традиционно негативный оттенок, в английском оно вполне нейтрально, а в устах самих nationalists – позитивно (как у нас «политическое прилагательное» национально-патриотический). Легкий отрицательный оттенок есть, однако, у прилагательного nationalistic. Пример из английского журнала World Link: Recently, a French deal to sell Thomson Consumer Electronics to Korea’s Daewoo collapsed largely on nationalistic grounds. – ...сделка не состоялась в основном из-за причин националистического характера. Соответственно, именно это слово (а не nationalist) чаще всего подходит при переводе русского прилагательного националистический.
