Это то же слово, что и английское "farthing" (древнеанглийское "feorðing", среднеанглийское "ferthing"), "четверть пенни"; но здесь оно использовано в его первоначальном смысле "четвертая часть, четверть". Оно построено по тому же принципу, что и слово "thriding", "третья часть", которое до сих пор используется в названиях йоркширских округов, при этом начальное "th" после "th" или "t" в названиях Northriding, Eastriding, Westriding утрачено. Применение этого слова для обозначения других мер, чем деньги, давно уже считается в английском языке устаревшим, а слово "farthing" используется, начиная со среднеанглийского, для обозначения "незначительного количества", так что для английского читателя применение этого слова к уделу в Shire (площадью около 18 000 квадратных миль) звучит комично. Этот оттенок значения вряд ли может быть воспроизведен при переводе, но можно использовать родственные слова, такие, как "fjerding" в датском, "fjärding" в шведском, или "Viertal" в немецком (его используют для обозначения "областей, округов").
